Czarnikow Energy is primarily focused upon sugar cane based ethanol; an important co-product to sugar in many parts of the world. Sugar cane is also the most effective source of fuel ethanol both in terms of cost and life cycle analysis.  

The use of bioethanol as a transport fuel dates back to the early 1900s though it was not until Brazil initiated the national fuel ethanol programme (proálcool) that ethanol began to achieve wider acceptance. Today, the market for ethanol blended fuel is expanding rapidly in the United States, Europe and Asia.
